Lots Of Copper
The story begins in 1868 when a merchant from Georgia discovered a keg of United States One Cent pieces. The merchant spent the Cents in payment of a debt. Eventually the Large Cents, most dated from 1816 to 1820 were bought by the William Chapman Company of New York at less than face value. It is reported that Chapman paid ninety cents per hundred coins! After attempting various means of getting rid of the Coppers, Chapman was able to sell the remainder to a New York coin collector by the name of John Randall who patiently, over several years, sold the coins to other collectors. It is directly because of Randall's diligence that many wonderful Mint State Copper Cents
are preserved for the Coin Collectors of today.
